Thesis Statement

"Is there a place for the old in today's society?"

Thesis statement:
Though the elderly are physically weaker than the youths of today, they can still contribute to today's society by sharing with the latter their experiences, thus aiding the latter in making good decisions for the society.

State whether the thesis is a 'complete' or 'compromised' one. Explain why.

The above thesis is one that is 'complete'. This is because after making a stand, no alternative viewpoint is introduced and only one side of the argument is evident.

Thesis Statement

"Is there a place for the old in today's society?"
Our group's take on this question is yes, there is a place being created for the old in today's society. This is evident as seen from government policies and actions taken towards safeguarding the needs and welfare of the elderly. In fact, with shrinking birth rate problem, Singapore's workforce in the near future would be signinficantly reduced, hence we will need a large demographic of the old to continue sustaining the economy. Fortunately, these senior sages have decades of experience and mentorship to provide important foresight, and guide the society into a prominent future ahead. They are part of our society, and can still contirbute in their own capacity.

State whether the thesis is a 'complete' or 'compromised' one. Explain why.

This is a 'complete' statement that fails to provide an alternative viewpoint towards this statement. At such, as it provides depth over breadth, it is not sufficient, due to the lack of an against stand. A 'compromised' statement on the other hand would entail a platform to compare and constrast various insights into the issue.

Is there a place for the old in today’s society?

The old in today’s society are given a place as seen from the various policies and actions taken by government to deal with the issue of aging population in the fast-paced world such as the raising of retirement age so that older people can work and support themselves, the opening of new hospitals and many other things done.

This is a complete thesis statement as only the points and evidence of one side of the essay is shown briefly in the statement, not considering the opposite point of view at all.

Thesis

"Is there a place for the old in today's society?"

In my opinion, the old and the elderly still have a place in today's society. These senior sages are the basis on which modern life and industry were built on. They are vast resources of knowledge, experiences and insights that should be cherished by all of us, and should be regarded as a group of people that is to be actively engaged for their expertise and opinions. However, despite this, the role of the elderly in our modern society is usually misconstrued as one that is antiquated as well as unrelated to modern experiences. As is the case, most of our elderly are considered to be rusting relics of times gone bye. This critical lack of understanding and appreciation for the elderly really provides a denial point of our own humanity as well as our own mortality.

State whether the thesis is a 'complete' or 'compromised' one. Explain why.

It is a compromised thesis, as though a stand is taken and clearly defined, an opposing viewpoint is brought into the picture to further balance the argument, as well as to bring a new perspective. The outcome of having a compromised statement would entail a more a comprehensive argument, as there is now a basis for contrast and comparison. Moreover, additional insights into the issue at hand are explored via the synthesis of both opposing sides, something which could not have been done were the thesis a 'complete' one.

Thesis

Below are our compromised thesis:
Although the old have limited productivity due to deteriorating of body functions and other capabilities, they still have many opportunities to contribute to the society based on their vast amount of experience. We need to utilize the old to contribute as to offset the huge burden on the smaller younger population.

The thesis is a compromised one as it shows awareness of other perspectives and refute those alternative perspectives.
